Apply Vapor control membrane

Vapor control membrane prevents moisture from penetrating the structure and insulation of facades and roofs, preventing condensation. The proper application of vapor control membrane is critical to preventing moisture problems in spaces we live in every day. So ensure proper ventilation and follow the proper steps for applying Vapour control membrane to ensure optimal protection. Learn more about applying vapor control membrane for a moisture-free living environment.

Where should I apply Vapour control membrane?

Vapour control membrane should be applied to the warm side (inside) of roof insulation and wall insulation. In roof insulation, the vapor control membrane is placed between the insulation material and the interior finish of the roof. This prevents water vapor from the heated room from penetrating into the insulation material and condensing. For wall insulation, Vapour control membrane is placed on the warm side of the wall construction. This prevents water vapor from penetrating from the interior space into the wall and condensing there.

In addition to these specific applications, it may also be necessary to use vapor control membrane in other situations, such as when insulating flat roofs or when using certain insulation materials. It is advisable to consult a professional construction expert to determine the proper application of Vapour control membrane based on your specific building project and circumstances. This allows you to effectively avoid moisture problems and create a healthy and sustainable living environment.

Vapour control membrane application step-by-step plan

Installing vapor control membrane is an important step in insulating a building. Here’s a guide you can follow to correctly apply vapor control membrane:

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. Preparation
    • Make sure the surface to which you are going to apply the Vapour Control membrane is clean and dry. Remove dust, dirt and any loose materials.
    • Measure the area where the film is to be applied and cut the film to size. Allow for overlaps of at least 10 cm between the different film strips.
  2. Start applying
    • Start at the lowest point of the space to be insulated and work upward. If insulation material is already in place, make sure the film is tight against it without folds or creases.
    • Roll out the Vapour Control membrane where the printing should be legible from the inside and attach its top side with VASTR ® Double-Sided tape or staples to the underlying structure. Make sure the film is kept tight and flat as you proceed.
  3. Fixing the film
    • Use VASTR ® Double-sided tape or staples to secure the sides of the film to the surface. Work carefully and make sure there are no openings through which moisture can penetrate.
    • If you apply multiple film strips, make sure that each strip overlaps by at least 10 cm. Attach the overlapping sections securely together with VASTR® Film tape basic or VAST® Total tape.
  4. Penetrations and connections:
    • When passing through pipes, cables or other conduits, make openings in the foil. Cut the film to size and make sure it is fastened tightly around the penetrations. Use Tyvek® FlexWrap tape or VASTR® Butyl tape to wind and watertight seal the openings.
    • Ensure that the film fits tightly to adjacent surfaces, such as walls, floors and ceilings, and if staples are used, make sure they are also taped with VASTR® Film tape basic or VAST® Total tape.
  5. Control and finishing:
    • Check that the Vapour control membrane is properly applied and that there are no openings or loose parts. Check that all overlaps are securely attached.
    • Once the foil is fully applied, you can install any finishing materials such as drywall or other coverings over the foil, depending on the type of construction.

Helpful tips for working with vapor control membrane

  1. Choose the right foil: There are several types of vapor control membranes available, varying in thickness, material and especially quality. Make sure you choose the right type of foil with proven quality that is suitable for the specific application and insulation material you are using.
  2. Wear protective clothing: When working with Vapour Control Membrane, it is important to wear protective clothing such as gloves and safety glasses. This helps prevent possible irritation or injury while cutting and attaching the film.
  3. Check the integrity of the film: Before applying the film, check that it has no cracks, holes or other damage. Good film integrity is essential to create an effective vapor control barrier.
  4. Keep the film tight and flat: While applying the film, it is important to keep it tight and flat. Creases, wrinkles or loose sections can allow moisture to pass through and reduce the effectiveness of the vapor control layer.
  5. Use appropriate fasteners: Be sure to use appropriate fasteners to hold the film in place. VASTR® Film tape basic is a common option, but you can also use VASTR® Total tape or staples, depending on the substrate and construction.
  6. Ensure proper connections and overlaps: Make sure that the film fits well with adjacent surfaces, such as walls, floors and ceilings. Overlap the foil courses by at least 10 cm to ensure proper continuity of the vapor control layer.
  7. Seal all penetrations and connections: Pay extra attention to sealing penetrations of pipes, cables and other conduits. Make sure there are no openings or gaps through which moisture can penetrate. Use tape or special sealants to seal these openings.
  8. Check the film after installation: After you install the film, check it thoroughly for any defects or loose parts. Repair or replace as necessary to ensure proper vapor control.

Remember that following the specific instructions and guidelines provided by the manufacturer of the vapor control membrane is always the best practice.
