Councilman Berkhout visits MG
Back to home base
On Thursday, Oct. 14, Alderman Robbert Berkhout and several colleagues visited the Meuwissen Gerritsen company. As producer and distributor, Meuwissen Gerritsen (MG Bouw) is the market leader in the Benelux for technical construction membranes. Former director Jan Gerritsen and current director Jaap Jan Gerritsen received the alderman at their building.
Construction membranes are produced and stored for distribution at the premises, located next to the Schoter Bridge. In addition, the sales team is also located in the newly renovated office on Jacques Meuwissenweg.
Family business
The family business started in 2020 under a new name but has had an extensive history in construction under the name “Meuwissen” since its founding in 1954. In the 1990s, Meuwissen was taken over by Jan Gerritsen. For a short period, the Meuwissen company was owned by the Finnish company Walki. The property did always remain the property of the Gerritsen family.
Current managing director Jaap Jan Gerritsen, son of Jan Gerritsen, decided in 2016 to buy back Meuwissen. Meanwhile, Jaap Jan had launched a company with its own product range under the name Gerritsen Industrie. Since January 2020, Meuwissen and Gerritsen Industrie have continued as Meuwissen Gerritsen (MG Bouw) under the leadership of Jaap Jan Gerritsen. This year, 2021, the family business moved back to its home base.
Commitment to the Waarderpolder
Jan Gerritsen has been active in the development of the Waarderpolder for many years. He did so not only as an entrepreneur, but also as treasurer of the Waarderpolder Park Management Foundation and as chairman of the Waarderpolder Collective Security Foundation. In 2019, Jan Gerritsen was named a Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau. He owes the royal decoration to his long-term selfless commitment to the safety and quality of the Waarderpolder.
Sustainable future
Among the topics discussed during the visit were the company’s history, contact with education, production and development of construction films and the associated challenges for Meuwissen Gerritsen. Thanks in part to the energy transition, MG’s product is more relevant than ever, and it shows. Insulation membranes are indispensable in making existing homes more sustainable. With the investment in new machinery, among other things, Jaap Jan believes he can quickly meet the growing demand. Meuwissen Gerritsen himself is also contributing to the energy transition. The in-house technical department is replacing all fluorescent lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting, and solar panels have been on the roof of the premises for some time. In addition, Meuwissen Gerritsen will work with park management to investigate the possibilities of having the overproduction of power benefit surrounding businesses.
The visit again concluded with a tour of the property. A great visit to a wonderful Waarderpolder company!
