This is how to prevent perforation
The functionality and effectiveness of MG films hinges on proper processing. Properly closing overlaps and perforations is an important part of this. In practice, there is frequent confusion about the proper sealing of installed battens or structural members. MG’s VAST-R® Butyl tape is the solution to prevent leakage of air or moisture through perforation of screws.
When a foil is properly installed and sealed air and wind tight, it functions optimally and ensures the life of the structure. However, if a tenon is later installed by screws after the foil is applied, this can cause perforation, which can result in unwanted air currents or leakage. This is because a perforation in the film can cause water leakage on the cold side and lead to unwanted energy loss or condensation on the warm side. Condensation can cause the structure to rot and reduce the effectiveness of the insulation. This ultimately causes the building’s life span and indoor climate to be negatively affected.
The VAST-R® Butyl Tape
To prevent screws from perforating the film through the tenon, we recommend that the tenon first be coated with VAST-R® Butyl tape for both battens in a ventilated facade and wall finish. The VAST-R® Butyl tape is a double-sided tape that seals the penetration of a screw completely wind-, water-, and airtight. This way you can be sure at all times that a screw through the tenon and foil will not cause unnecessary damage.
Processing
Apply the VAST-R® Butyl tape to the center of the back of the tenon. Press the tape firmly so that it has a good connection to the tenon everywhere. Remove the release liner and then apply the tengel to the desired location and screw the tengel in place. The elastic core of butyl molds to uneven substrates. The screw will thread through the tenon, the VAST-R® Butyl tape and the film into the wood behind. The VAST-R® Butyl tape will close completely around the screw, preventing perforation. In other words, VAST-R® Butyl tape is ideal and indispensable for any job in façade work or airtight construction.
